La prensa libre estadounidense y Puerto Rico / The US free press and Puerto Rico

¿No le parece extraño que la prensa libre de la democracia más grande del mundo no considera noticia que su país tiene a Puerto Rico como colonia por los últimos 116 años?  ¿Por qué este silencio total?

La mayoría de los puertorriqueños en la ciudad de Nueva York no saben que anualmente en junio se celebra una vista en la Organización de Naciones Unidas (ONU) para discutir la descolonización de Puerto Rico.  La población más grande de puertorriqueños en Nueva York no sabe que en esa ciudad la ONU está hablando de ellos.  ¿Porque C-SPAN o PBS no lo transmite como un servicio público? ¿Por qué el video solo se puede ver en el WEBCAST de la ONU en su página cibernética?

¿Por qué no es noticia que su gobierno ha ignorado 33 resoluciones de la ONU pidiéndole que inmediatamente descolonice a Puerto Rico?  ¿Por qué tampoco es noticia que su gobierno crea que la descolonización de Puerto Rico es un asunto domestico que no le concierne en nada a la comunidad internacional?  ¿Cómo es posible que el mismo gobierno que se robó la isla va ser el responsable de devolvérselo a los puertorriqueños y eso no ser noticia?  ¡Pero, al contrario, esto sí es noticia de primera plana para el resto del mundo!

¿Y qué pasó con el discurso del gobierno de Estados Unidos de que una prensa libre es crucial en una democracia para mantener un cotejo y balance de poder?  ¿Por qué solo aparece repetidamente en toda la prensa estadounidense solo la noticia que el gobierno quiere que salga para así poder moldear la opinión pública a su manera?    

Una democracia no puede existir sin que el ciudadano pueda cuestionar todo lo que su gobierno hace en su nombre.  Tenemos que usar las fuentes externas al gobierno para enterarse de verdad de lo que está pasando en el mundo.  Si realmente EEUU es una democracia, ¿por qué solo se benefician unos poquitos?  ¡No puede ser que la mayoría del estadounidense es masoquista!

Por eso es que necesitamos protestar pacíficamente por lo menos 3 veces al año para descolonizar a Puerto Rico. 

La primera será una marcha en Puerto Rico hasta el Tribunal de Estado Unidos cada 22 de marzo cuando celebramos el Día de la Abolición de la Esclavitud.  El segundo será otra marcha el día antes de la vista anual sobre la descolonización de Puerto Rico en la ONU.  La tercera será una protesta en Nueva York en el mismo día en que se celebra la vista sobre la descolonización de Puerto Rico.  Y por supuesto, estaríamos dispuesto de unirnos a todas las demonstraciones para excarcelar a Oscar López Rivera.

¡Estas protestas son necesarias, porque los que tienen colonias no creen en la justicia para todos!

 

 

Isn’t it strange that the free press of the world’s greatest democracy doesn’t find it news worthy that its government has had Puerto Rico as a colony for the last 116 years?  Why this new blackout?

Most Puerto Ricans in New York City don’t know that the United Nations (UN) holds an annual hearing to discuss Puerto Rico decolonization.  The biggest Puerto Rican population outside of Puerto Rico doesn’t know that in that city the UN is talking about them.  Why don’t C-SPAN or PBS transmit it as a public service?  Why is it that you can only see the video on the UN’s WEBCAST on its website?

Why is it not news that its government has ignored 33 UN resolutions asking the US to immediately decolonize Puerto Rico?  Why isn’t it also news that its government believes that the decolonization of Puerto Rico is not any of the UN’s business, because it’s a US domestic issue.  How is it possible for the one who stole the island to be in charge of giving it back to the Puerto Ricans, and that not be news?  But, on the contrary, these are headline news everywhere else in the world!

And what about the US' discourse that a free press is crucial in a democracy to keep a check and balance?  Why is it that the only news published is the one that the US government wants out there to mold public opinion to its desire. 

A democracy can’t exist without its citizenry questioning everything that its government does in their name.  We must use other news sources outside the government’s control to really know what is happening around the word.  If the US is really a democracy, why is it that only a few benefit from it?  It can’t be that the majority of US citizens are masochists! 

This is why we must peacefully protest at least 3 times a year until Puerto Rico is decolonized.

Join 3 peaceful protests a year until we decolonize Puerto Rico.  The first one will be a march in Puerto Rico to the US Courthouse on March 22 – The Abolition of Slavery Day.  The second one will be another march in Puerto Rico on the day before the UN hearing concerning the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  The third one will be a protest in New York City on the day that the UN has its annual hearing about the decolonization of Puerto Rico.  Of course, we will also support all demonstrations for the release of our Puerto Rican political prisoner Oscar López Rivera.

These protests are absolutely necessary, because 116 years of Puerto Rico colonialism means that the US government doesn't  believe in justice for all!
